Celebrating Assumption of Mary Day at Colegio Decroly Americano

August 8, 2024

As we embark on a new academic year at Colegio Decroly Americano (CDA), we are thrilled to announce the first holiday on our calendar: the Assumption of Mary, celebrated on August 15. This day holds deep cultural and religious significance, especially here in Guatemala, where the Assumption of Mary is not only a revered religious observance but also a day of community reflection and celebration.

The Cultural Significance of the Assumption of Mary in Guatemala

In Guatemala, the Assumption of Mary, known as “La Asunción de la Virgen María,” is a cherished tradition. This day commemorates the belief that the Virgin Mary was taken up into heaven, body and soul, at the end of her earthly life. For many Guatemalans, Mary is seen as a figure of protection and comfort, and her assumption is a symbol of hope and faith.

Interestingly, the official name of Guatemala City is “Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción.” This name was given when the city was founded as the new capital in 1776, following the destruction of the previous capital, Santiago de los Caballeros (also known as Antigua), by earthquakes. The name honors the Assumption of Mary, reflecting the deep religious and cultural ties that have shaped the history of Guatemala. By invoking the Virgin Mary in the city’s name, the founders sought her protection and blessing over the new capital.

Throughout the country, particularly in regions like Guatemala City and the department of Sacatepéquez, we see a variety of celebrations. These include processions, masses, and cultural events that bring communities together in joyous reverence. The day is marked by the sound of church bells, vibrant floral displays, and a sense of collective peace that permeates the air.

For our students and families, this holiday is not only a time to rest and recharge but also an opportunity to connect with these rich cultural traditions. It is a day to reflect on the values of faith, community, and the importance of cultural heritage.
