Exploring the Wonders of Nature: Our Memorable Field Trips to La Aurora Zoo

At Colegio Decroly Americano, we believe in being one of the best schools in Guatemala by providing enriching experiences that ignite curiosity and foster a deeper appreciation for the world around us. Recently, our grades 1-4 students embarked on an exciting adventure to La Aurora Zoo, where they immersed themselves in the wonders of nature while also aligning with learning goals from Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

During our visit to the zoo, students had the opportunity to observe a diverse range of animal species in their habitats, from majestic lions and playful monkeys to colorful tropical birds. As they interacted with the exhibits and engaged in hands-on activities, they not only expanded their knowledge of the animal kingdom but also developed crucial scientific inquiry skills outlined in the NGSS.

For instance, students explored the concept of biodiversity by observing the various ecosystems represented at the zoo and discussing the importance of preserving habitat diversity for the survival of different species. This aligns with NGSS standards related to biodiversity and ecosystems (NGSS LS4-3).

Furthermore, our visit to La Aurora Zoo provided a rich context for integrating literacy skills outlined in the CCSS. Students engaged in close observation and descriptive writing exercises as they documented their observations of animal behavior and physical characteristics. This practice supports CCSS standards for reading informational texts (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.3.1) and writing narratives (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3).

In addition to academic learning, the field trip offered valuable opportunities for social-emotional growth and cultural appreciation. Students collaborated with their peers to share insights and discoveries, fostering a sense of community and teamwork. They also gained a deeper understanding of the importance of conservation efforts in preserving our natural heritage, aligning with NGSS standards for environmental conservation (NGSS ESS3-1).

As educators at CDA, we are committed to providing holistic learning experiences that integrate academic standards with real-world exploration. Through field trips like our visit to La Aurora Zoo, we inspire our students to become lifelong learners and responsible stewards of the environment.
